Can I post about my business on your Facebook wall? No.

Can I post about my business on your Facebook wall? No.

Can I post about my business on your Facebook wall? Noooooooo!

I thought we had heard the end of it, but it’s back! People are once again making requests about “can I post about my business on your wall?” Don’t do it!

Some things to consider:

1) That’s not how Facebook’s newsfeed works. Posting on several people’s wall is a lot of work for little return since the algorithm will mostly share your post on someone else’s wall only with your mutual friends. Instead, ask your friend privately if they will post something themselves making a recommendation for you. Referrals are great! If someone is interested but doesn’t want to write it, help her out with what to say if she’s not very familiar with your business. This happens all the time. You’d be surprised how many businesses write their own testimonials on behalf of their clients.

2) There was a lot of this happening last November, and a lot of people thought it was super-duper spammy. I’m in that camp myself. I love you all, but I moderate posts on my wall for a reason. Almost every day, someone posts something on my wall trying to sell stuff to me and my friends. It’s obnoxious. I’m happy to post about things I enjoy, because I enjoy it and want to help out my friend who sells it. But I also don’t want my friends to feel sold to on my personal accounts. They didn’t sign up for that.

3) This type of post shows your friend’s friends that you care about the quick sale. Let that sink in for a moment. Is it worth it to get a quick sale from one or two people? Is it also worth it to have a group of people potentially form a negative opinion of you? Your best marketing tool is your reputation. When you engage in activities like this, it reduces your credibility.

So please reconsider this tactic. I’ve seen a few people do this lately, and there are MUCH better ways to accomplish your end goal. Remember the power of the referral. What your friend says about you goes MUCH FARTHER than anything you can say about yourself and your own business on her page.

To your great success!
